New Study Highlights Role of Lyme Disease in Bizarre Skin Disorder

The Charles E. Holman Morgellons Disease Foundation supports research to unravel the mystery of Morgellons Disease.

AUSTIN, Texas (PRWEB) May 01, 2018

Morgellons disease is a bizarre condition that features vividly colored filaments in skin lesions. The filaments are composed of human proteins that appear to proliferate in response to infection with the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. This organism is a type of corkscrew-shaped bacteria called a spirochete (pronounced spiro’keet) that is related to the agent of syphilis. A new study conducted by an international team of researchers found viable Borrelia spirochetes in cultures taken from three Morgellons patients who had been treated with recommended doses of antibiotics.

The study team included Marianne Middelveen, a veterinary microbiologist from Canada, molecular biologists Jennie Burke and Agustin Franco from Australia, molecular biologists Eva Sapi and Katherine Filush from Connecticut, and nurse practitioner Melissa Fesler and internist Raphael Stricker from California. The study was published in the open access journal Healthcare (Basel) (http://www.mdpi.com/2227-9032/6/2/33/htm. “Our findings suggest that infection with the Lyme spirochete may persist in Morgellons patients despite supposedly adequate antibiotic therapy,” said Middelveen, lead author of the published study.

The study team used sophisticated techniques to detect and identify microorganisms in cultures taken from research subjects. Twelve Lyme patients had positive cultures for Borrelia spirochetes, even if they were currently taking antibiotics. Three of the 12 subjects in the study had Morgellons disease symptoms. In contrast, asymptomatic control subjects with negative Lyme antibody tests had no evidence of the Lyme spirochete in their culture samples.

It is known that Morgellons disease occurs in about 6% of Lyme disease patients. The presence of the characteristic filaments seen in Morgellons patient specimens can be accompanied by stinging and crawling sensations. Some people may mistakenly believe the sensations are caused by a parasite. Lack of adequate understanding has led some medical practitioners to falsely believe that the disease is caused by delusional mental illness, resulting in heated debate among medical professionals.

Not only is the topic of Morgellons controversial, but Lyme disease is a controversial topic too. Persistent infection with the Lyme spirochete despite antibiotic therapy was recently demonstrated in monkeys. Despite this fact, some healthcare professionals maintain that recalcitrant infection is impossible in human beings. The new study has provided results that refute this view and corroborate the monkey study. “In the midst of all this controversy, the patients who suffer from this disorder are forgotten,” said Cindy Casey, director of the Charles E Holman Morgellons Disease Foundation based in Austin, TX. “It is imperative that we find a better way to treat the underlying cause of Morgellons disease.”

Dr. Stricker agrees with Casey: “Because of their obvious skin pathology, Morgellons patients provide a golden opportunity to find better ways to treat Lyme disease,” he said. “More research is desperately needed to help these patients with persistent skin lesions to get rid of their underlying infection.”

About the Charles E. Holman Morgellons Disease Foundation:

SYDNEY, and DENVER (PRWEB) May 01, 2018

Avoka, the global leader in customer acquisition journeys in banking, announced it was chosen by the diversified Australian motoring group RACQ as the account opening and onboarding platform for its newly launched RACQ Bank.

In September last year, RACQ became the world’s first automobile club to launch a bank, forming RACQ Bank following a merger with QT Mutual Bank as part of its commitment to broaden its portfolio offering and strengthen its relationship with its more than 1.6 million members throughout Queensland.

“RACQ successfully launched a new line of banking products to its customers using Avoka technology. Working with Avoka, RACQ Bank now has the modern banking tools that allow us to offer digital platforms equal to any major bank,” RACQ Chief Information Officer Greg Booker said.

RACQ Bank customers now have an alternative to traditional banks with access to personal banking products with competitive rates and exceptional service, Mr. Booker added.

Avoka Chief Executive Phil Copeland said there is significant opportunity for Avoka’s technology to be used by companies that are disrupting the status quo.

“Avoka is now an essential part of the glue that banks and their challengers need to secure their customer base by providing the user-friendly technology they now expect to be available at the start of any banking relationship,” said Mr. Copeland.

“Our innovative products are experiencing solid demand from financial services firms around the world. While their business model is different, traditional banks and start-ups are both aware of the need to impress customers as early as possible while also making internal processing of account applications as simple and efficient as possible,” Copeland added.

Working on RACQ’s tight schedule, Avoka was engaged to deliver a seamless digital sales process across four retail banking products – personal loans, transaction accounts, saving accounts and home loan inquiries.

“Avoka is excited to be working with RACQ and looks forward to providing further digital enhancements with our Avoka Transact platform to improve their operations and build even more engagement with their members,” said Will Beaumont, Avoka’s General Manager, Australia & New Zealand.

GasBuddy Reveals Best and Worst Days of the Week to Buy Gas

Gas prices expected to continue rising; GasBuddy reveals optimal days to fill-up to save the most money and time

BOSTON (PRWEB) May 01, 2018

Gasoline prices are at their highest levels since 2014 and will continue to rise through Memorial Day. With many metro areas across the nation seeing prices more than $3 per gallon, GasBuddy, the only smartphone app connecting drivers with their Perfect Pit Stop, today issued a new study that found the best and worst days of the week to buy gas to maximize savings at the pump and avoid the lines during the busy summer travel season.

Best Day To Save Money: Monday

“The case of the Mondays” is not a thing when it comes to pumping gas. GasBuddy analyzed gas price data from the period of January - March 2018 and found that the first day of the work week offers the lowest average gas price in 21 states, making it the best day to fill-up. Friday is the worst day to buy gas in 19 states, having the most expensive average.

“Though there is variation in daily gas prices across different states, the consensus is that the earlier motorists fill-up during the week, the better,” says Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Following Monday, Sunday is the cheapest day to fill-up. Conversely, Thursday follows Friday as the most expensive day to fill-up.”

Monday was also the best day to buy gas in 2017, according to GasBuddy’s previous study.

Best Day To Avoid Lines: Sunday

Don’t like waiting in line? GasBuddy also analyzed GasBuddy foot traffic data in the same timeframe and found that gas stations across the country are least busy on Sundays, followed by Mondays. Friday is the busiest day.

“Consumers are missing a big opportunity at the pump when it comes to saving time and money,” says DeHaan. “Our data shows that most motorists are filling up on not only the most expensive day, but the busiest. Having a tank of gas last until Sunday or even Monday each week can collectively save drivers $2.6 billion, and spare the headache of not being able to find an available pump.”

Commuters looking to avoid the lines should fill-up on Monday or Tuesday between 8 - 10 a.m.

About GasBuddy
GasBuddy is a smartphone app connecting drivers with their Perfect Pit Stop. GasBuddy is the leader in crowdsourced information to help drivers find the best gas prices, closest stations, friendliest service, cleanest restrooms, tastiest coffee and much more. GasBuddy is the leading source for the most accurate, real-time fuel prices at more than 140,000 gas stations in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The Company’s B2B Retailer Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), known as GasBuddy Business Pages, provide Fuel Marketers and Retailers their best opportunity to maintain their station information, manage their brand, and promote to their target consumer audience. Team India doesn't want to face Australia in a day-night Test, here's why

$
0
0
While Cricket Australia (CA) is trying its best to convince the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to sanction a day-night Test between the two countries later this year Down Under, it has been learnt that the Indian cricket team is not in favour of it.

The Indian team management has contacted the Committee of Administrators (CoA) and expressed reluctance to compete in a day-night Test against Australia. Virat Kohli's team tour Australia at the end of the year, with the first of four Tests starting in Adelaide on December 6.

“The CoA spoke to Ravi Shastri (the Indian team head coach) on April 12 and Shastri categorically mentioned that he has consulted with the team and the team is not ready to play pink-ball cricket just now. So a question of playing a day-night Test match in Adelaide just doesn’t arise,” a CoA member was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The reason for India's reluctance is multifold. First, the Indian camp reckons they have a great opportunity to win the series Down Under, with star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner serving a one-year ban. A pink-ball Test, which favours fast-bowlers, would surely give the hosts the upper hand as they have a battery of quality pacers in their ranks. Secondly, Team India doesn't want to do any experiments before the ICC World Cup in England next year.

Meanwhile, CA confirmed on Monday that Adelaide Oval will be the venue for the series-opening Test against India but has yet to strike an agreement with the Indian board (BCCI) on staging the match under lights. CA said it was continuing discussions with the BCCI with a view to playing their first day-night Test in Adelaide from Dec. 6-10.

"It is our preference that we play India in a day-night Test match in Adelaide, but we are still working through this detail and hope to have an answer on this in the coming weeks," CA CEO James Sutherland said in a media release.

Australia has hosted New Zealand, South Africa and England in day-night Tests at Adelaide Oval, winning all three of the pink ball matches. India have never played a floodlit match. South Africa were initially reluctant to play their 2016 Test under lights at Adelaide, fearing the hosts would have an unfair advantage. The Proteas lost by seven wickets.

Australia and India play their second Test at the new Perth Stadium in Burswood, across the Swan river from the city's traditional Test venue, the WACA. The series continues with the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from Dec. 26 and wraps up in the New Year at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Jan. 3-7).

The Gabba in Brisbane, which usually hosts the first Test of the Australian summer, has been relegated to the Jan. 24-28 series-opener against Sri Lanka, who will tour the country for the first time in six years. Canberra's Manuka Oval will then host its first Test match from Feb. 1 when the home side meet Sri Lanka in their second and final fixture.

India's tour will kick off with a three-match Twenty20 international series in November after Australia start the home summer with four limited overs matches against South Africa. The hosts will also play India in three ODIs in January.

The schedule, which will see Test cricket played in February for the first time in over 20 years, has been structured to avoid clashing with the domestic 'Big Bash' T20 competition, which has proved a bigger drawcard for local fans than some Test matches in recent seasons. "This will be a win for fans, with reduced overlap with the Big Bash," Sutherland said.

LastPass Psychology of Passwords Report Highlights Password Behavior Unchanged Even as Cyber Threats Rise

Data Breaches and Hacking Cause Fear, But Only 55% Would Update Passwords If Hacked

BOSTON, May 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LastPass by LogMeIn, a leader in password management, today released findings of a new global survey, “Psychology of Passwords: Neglect is Helping Hackers Win,” revealing that despite today’s increased threat landscape and heightened global awareness of hacking and data breaches, password behaviors remain largely unchanged. Data from the survey shows that 91 percent of people know that using the same password for multiple accounts is a security risk, yet 59 percent continue to use the same password. As a result, individuals’ behavior in creating, changing and managing passwords in both their professional and personal lives is slow to match the rapid evolution of cybersecurity threats. The global survey, which polled 2,000 individuals across the United States, Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, provides evidence that increased knowledge of security best practices doesn’t necessarily translate into better password management, and highlights regional, generational and personality differences can factor into password security.

Key findings include:

· *Global Cyber Threats Skyrocket but Password Behaviors Unchanged
*Password behaviors remain largely unchanged from the same study conducted two years ago — translating to some risky behaviors. 53 percent report not changing passwords in the past 12 months despite a breach in the news. And while 91 percent know that using the same password for multiple accounts is a security risk, 59 percent mostly or always use the same password.

· *Fear of Forgetfulness = Number One Reason for Password Reuse
*Not only do most respondents (59 percent) use the same password for multiple accounts, but many continue to use that password as long as possible — until required by IT to update or if impacted by a security incident. The fear of forgetfulness was the number one reason for reuse (61 percent), followed by wanting to know and be in control of all of their passwords (50 percent).

· *Attention IT: Password Behaviors Same at Work and Home
*The majority of respondents (79 percent) report having between one and 20 online accounts for work and personal use. When it comes to password creation, nearly half (47 percent) say there is no difference in passwords created for these accounts. Only 19 percent create more secure passwords for work and 38 percent never reuse the same password between work and personal, which means that 62 percent do.

· *Type A Personalities Take Passwords More Seriously
*Bad password behavior in Type A personalities stems from their need to be in control, whereas Type B personalities have a casual, laid-back attitude toward password security. Respondents who identify as Type A personalities are more likely than Type B personalities to stay on top of password security: 77 percent put a lot of thought into password creation, compared to 67 percent of Type B. And Type A users consider themselves informed about password best practices (76 percent) over Type B users (68 percent).

· *Security-conscious Thinking Doesn’t Translate to Action
*The data showed several contradictions, with respondents saying one thing and in turn, doing another. 72 percent say they feel informed on password best practices, but 64 percent of those say having a password that’s easy to remember is most important. Similarly, 91 percent recognize that using the same or similar passwords for multiple logins is a security risk, yet 58 percent mostly or always use the same password or variation of the same password.

“The cyber threats facing consumers and businesses are becoming more targeted and successful, yet there remains a clear disconnect in users’ password beliefs and their willingness to take action,” said Sandor Palfy, Chief Technology Officer of Identity and Access Management at LogMeIn. “Individuals seem to understand password best practices, but often exhibit password behaviors that can expose their information to threat actors. Taking a few simple steps to improve how you manage passwords can lead to increased safety for online accounts whether personal or professional.”

The Psychology of Passwords survey was commissioned by LastPass and fielded by independent panel research firm Lab42 from February 8-21, 2018. The responses were generated from a survey of 2,000 adults, ages 25 to 60 who have at least one online account. Survey respondents represented the United States, Germany, France, Australia and the United Kingdom. Where possible, results were compared with the 2016 Psychology of Passwords survey commissioned by LastPass.

SYDNEY (AP) — Australian supporters of voluntary euthanasia fear doctors will try to prevent a 104-year-old scientist from flying to Switzerland this week to end his life through that country's program of legal assisted dying. Renowned academic David Goodall has made arrangements to travel to the Swiss city of Basel, where an end of life clinic has approved his application for euthanasia, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported Tuesday. Goodall, an honorary research associate at Edith Cowan University in the West Australian capital of Perth, does not have a terminal illness, but is seeking voluntary euthanasia — which is illegal in Australia — on the grounds his quality of life has deteriorated.
