New Volkswagen Golf GTI Coming to Australia Only as a 5-Door Oh how the hot hatch market has changed over these odd years. The Golf GTI used to be a three-door, the size of the our current Polo, but it's grown into a luxury mobile with a big engine. Is that a bad thing? Not for Volkswagen, especially since there are plenty of buyers willing to spend top dollar on the best version of the Golf. The new GTI is headed for Australia next month, but a couple of days ago, the company's Reported by autoevolution 4 days ago.

Gold iPhone 5s Models Seeing Little to No Stock for Launch Day in Australia

With Apple's official Australian launch for the iPhone 5s just a short time away, evidence of significant shortages of gold models is beginning to surface, with one Twitter user at the Doncaster retail store sharing word from store staff that they have no gold models on launch day and may not have any for up to three weeks.
In a similar vein, it appears that the Apple Store iOS app has begun taking orders for the iPhone 5s in Australia, with Sonny Dickson sharing a screenshot showing that the gold 64GB iPhone 5s debuted with a shipping estimate of 7-10 business days.

It is unclear if the dearth of gold models will extend to other first-wave markets, but signs are increasingly pointing to the new color being very difficult to find at launch.

*Update*: The Australian Apple Store is now back online and showing 7-10 business days for colors and capacities of the iPhone 5s.*Recent Mac and iOS Blog Stories*

iPhone 5s Orders Launch to 7-10 Day Estimates in Australia/China, 'October' in Hong Kong/Singapore

As we've been documenting in updates to our article about shortages of gold iPhone 5S models in Australia, shortages of all models of the device are rapidly coming apparent as Apple's online stores in the Asia-Pacific region are coming back online.
In both Australia and China, all models in all colors are showing shipping estimates of 7-10 business days at launch, with Hong Kong and Singapore seeing even longer estimates simply stating "October".

The extended shipping dates suggest that supplies are likely to be tight around the world, meaning that those looking to order through Apple's online stores will need to consider their plans if they hope to have a device in hand quickly. In-store stocks are also likely to be quite limited, with perhaps more customers now electing to camp out at their local stores once they've seen the delays they may encounter ordering online.*Recent Mac and iOS Blog Stories*

Pet Food and Supplies Retailers in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld

$

A shrinking pet population and increasing competition from online retailers is constraining industry growth. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has added a report on the Pet Food and Supplies Retailers in Australia to its growing industry report collection.

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) September 20, 2013

Pets are an integral part of the lives of many owners. Over 60% of Australian households own a pet. Over the past five years, however, financial concerns have become more prevalent for Australian consumers, leading many potential pet owners to postpone their purchases indefinitely. IBISWorld industry analyst Craig Shulman states, “Urbanisation has led to an increasing number of households moving into smaller dwellings or apartments, which has deterred large animal ownership. As a result, the dog and cat pet population has suffered, while demand has grown for some smaller animals (especially fish).” The decline in pet ownership has meant that core pet-related products, such as pet food, have declined in demand, leading to an overall decline in demand for the Pet Food and Supplies Retailers industry. Over the five years through 2013-14, revenue is expected to decline at a compound annual rate of 0.5%. In 2013-14, revenue is also expected to decline 0.5% to reach $3.3 billion.

According to Shulman, "Despite the fall in the total number of pets, owners are spending more on each pet.” Pets are becoming increasingly humanised, leading to increased investments in premium products and services (financial situation permitting), such as premium pet food and healthcare products. Pet food is increasingly being developed and marketed to be more appealing to human tastes, resulting in a rise in gourmet flavours and brands. Pet ownership is also taking on a premium character, as potential pet owners increasingly prefer to purchase pets from professional breeders. Animal shelters are also a popular source of pets as less fussy potential owners are able to find cheaper pets that come from a more socially conscious location. Some pet retailers, on the other hand, have a reputation for sourcing pets from pet farms, which may not treat the animals well. The next five years are expected to be more difficult for the industry. The reduced demand for pet products over the past five years has led to significant consolidation among specialist pet retailers, particularly as major supermarkets, veterinary clinics and online retailers increase in prominence and put further pressure on prices. Specialist pet retailers are expected to struggle to differentiate themselves as pet purchases increasingly shifts towards other retailers.

The Pet Food and Supplies Retailers industry operates at a medium level of market share concentration. The industry spans a variety of different businesses. The largest players are Woolworths and Wesfarmers, which operate major supermarket chains and discount department stores, which provide large, easily accessible locations for both pet food and accessories. The industry is also comprised of mid-tier chain stores including Mammoth Holdings and Petstock. Beyond these four players, enterprises are mostly small. For example, a number of companies sell pet food, including pet stores, specialist pet warehouses, milk bars, petrol stations and markets. None of these outlets account for enough revenue to influence the market. For more information, visit IBISWorld’s Pet Food and Supplies Retailers report in Australia industry page.

Staff at Australia Zoo has recently announced that the facility is home to a baby echidna. The creature, pictured above, was born about a month ago, and is growing stronger every day. Keepers say the baby echidna was born to mom Tippy and dad Pickle. Apparently, it is the 24th creature of its kind to have ever been bred in captivity. Because it doesn't yet have any spikes on its body and is therefore quite huggable, its mother still carries it around in its pouch. Reported by Softpedia 4 days ago.

Online Perfume and Cosmetics Sales in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Over the past five years, the increasing acceptance of online shopping drove the Online Perfume and Cosmetics Sales industry in Australia to post strong growth. For this reason, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated its report on the Online Perfume and Cosmetics Sales industry in Australia.

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) September 21, 2013

The Online Perfume and Cosmetic Sales industry in Australia has performed strongly over the past five years, in line with the general online retail industry. The industry took a hit in 2008-09 due to the global financial crisis, and remained subdued over 2009-10 as the effects lingered. During these two years, consumer sentiment was low and savings levels increased. Although industry products are somewhat inelastic, as they are perceived by many to be necessities, they are still discretionary items. Consumers tended to refrain from purchasing extra unnecessary items, and downgraded to cheaper alternatives of items they required. As soon as sentiment improved and economic activity strengthened in 2010-11, industry revenue rebounded solidly with a 9.8% gain. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Kosta Lev, “Revenue growth has remained strong since then, driven by increasing health awareness, rapid internet penetration and the subsequent rise in online retailing.”

Consumers are embracing the choice and convenience of shopping from their computers at home, especially with the increasing bandwidth speeds available. Consumers are also taking a more holistic approach towards health consciousness, which includes taking care of themselves on the inside, through diet and healthy lifestyles, and the outside, through skincare and personal grooming. This trend is helping drive demand for industry products. “Perhaps the most significant development over the past five years has been the growth in the male customer base, which has been a large contributor to a whole range of new, male-targeted products,” says Lev. Over the five years through 2013-14, industry revenue is expected to grow at an annualised 7.5% to total $99.3 million. This includes forecast revenue growth of 10.1% over 2013-14. The industry has a low level of concentration, with no operators taking a significant market share.

Strong growth is expected to continue over the five years through 2018-19, although at a slower pace than during the previous period. Competition from external threats, especially supermarkets, pharmacies and other online retailers that sell industry products, is expected to marginalise revenue growth. Even so, continued growth in online shopping, health consciousness and a growing male customer base will keep the industry buoyed. Males are becoming increasingly image conscious and will be a major driver of growth in the Online Perfume and Cosmetics Sales industry over the next five years.

Child Care Services in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

$

Continued growth of the Child Care Services industry in Australia will be contingent on operators accepting smaller profit margins. For this reason, industry research firm IBISWorld has updated its report on the Child Care Services industry in Australia.

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) September 22, 2013

In 2011-12, over one million children between the ages of 0 and 12 attended Australian Government approved or state and territory government funded or provided childcare services. Similar numbers are expected to attend in 2013-14. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Arna Richardson, “Increasing government assistance for parents looking to put their children in day care has aided the Child Care Services industry in Australia”. This assistance has included various payments to help families afford childcare (principally the Child Care Rebate and Child Care Benefit) and encourage parents' return to the workforce. This assistance has helped drive industry growth over the five years through 2013-14, with revenue growing by an annualised 1.9%. In 2013-14, the industry is expected to generate revenue of $6.3 billion, up 3.8% from the previous year.

“Along with an increase in government support, a rise in the female labour participation rate over the past five years has reinforced demand for childcare,” says Richardson. Furthermore, relaxation of government regulation allowing childcare centres to register as kindergarten providers has bolstered the appeal of long day care centres, allowing them to compete directly with the Preschool Education industry. An associated industry development has been the move away from the provision of mere childcare services to more educational services in line with changing government policy. To this end, a number of childcare providers (both private and community-based) have changed the names of their facilities, re-labelling them as early learning centres. Prior to the collapse of former industry powerhouse ABC Learning, the industry was highly concentrated. Following the company’s collapse, the industry has returned a low level of market concentration, with Goodstart Early Learning Ltd the only major player.

Over the five years through 2018-19, continued government support and a mini baby boom will contribute to growth. However, this is conditional on shrinking margins for operators. Government regulations mandating higher staff-to-child ratios and higher standards of staff qualifications following the National Quality Standard are likely to increase wage costs for operators. This is a key factor leading to the dominance of non-profit operators, which looks to be the defining story of the Child Care Services industry in the long term.
